The House farm bill went down to defeat Friday with 198 members voting for the bill and 213 voting against it. The setback adds to the possibility of an extension that could complicate farmers' ability to switch commodity programs for their base acres.
July corn was 3 cents higher, July soybeans were 18 cents higher, and July Kansas City (HRW) wheat was 4 cents higher.
Look for cattle futures to open moderately higher, supported by short-covering, cash premiums and outside markets. Hog contracts should also begin higher with the help of constructive seasonal fundamentals and the possibility of improving Chinese demand.
